Chip Kelly will be the 49ers’ head coach in 2017 “regardless of what happens” for the remainder of this season, Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reported Sunday morning.
Glazer reported on Fox NFL Sunday that Kelly will not be going back to the University of Oregon after Ducks coach Mark Helfrich was fired last week, and that the Niners head coach will be at the helm next season, even if San Francisco finishes 2016 on a 15 game losing streak.
“I know the Oregon job opened up, he’s not going to Oregon,” Glazer said. “Regardless of what happens down the stretch here, Chip Kelly will be the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers next year.”
With the way the season has gone, it would seem that Sunday’s report puts general manager Trent Baalke’s future with the 49ers in serious doubt, as it seems unlikely that both would be brought back after what may go down as the worst season in franchise history.
