Sacramento Bee reporter Matt Barrows joined the Murph and Mac show Monday morning to chat about the 1-12 49ers.
While national reports are swirling that Chip Kelly’s job will be in question, depending on who the new general manager is, Barrows believes the York family really would like to keep the embattled head coach.
“To me, it’s all still being written unfortunately,” Barrows said. “I think that the York’s would like nothing more — even the most meager reason to bring back Chip Kelly. There just searching for something good. There have been some good things here and there.
“But these last two games are among the worst of the season. And this is not where you want to have those two games. You want there to be some sort of upswing by the end. And man, Kelly and the boys just aren’t providing the York’s with that smallest bit of optimism.
“My point being: It’s still being written, no one has made any decisions at this point.”
We wrote mortifying losses to the Jets and Bears might make it impossible for an incoming GM to agree to keep Kelly. Injuries or the roster be damned, Kelly hasn’t proven he can beat equally floundering teams — an alarm bell.
