Another Sunday, another insider report on the future of the San Francisco 49ers.
After a few years of Jed York making some critical errors to the franchise, CBSSports.com’s Jason La Confora is reporting that his parents are set to get more involved with the franchise.
In addition, the York family is being connected to Mike Shanahan.
From JLC:
Several NFL owners believe Jed York’s parents, Denise and John York, will be taking a more hands-on approach with the team as they determine how to reposition the franchise, and Mike Shanahan, who has been under consideration for coaching openings there in the past, could join the 49ers in a coaching and/or executive capacity. His name continues to be connected to potential openings there, and the Yorks have spoken to him in the past.
While there have been recent reports that Chip Kelly, in his first year as 49ers coach with just one victory thus far, is safe, sources say that a final determination on that matter would not occur until after the team has sorted out its front office.
A few weeks ago, we wrote that there was one combination that would make the Yorks fire Kelly after just one season: Mike and Kyle Shanahan. Kyle is currently having one of his best seasons as an offensive coordinator with the Falcons and is viewed as one of the hottest coaching prospects, while Mike drafted several building blocks on the Redskins roster, including Kirk Cousins and Jordan Reed.
From me:
The point is that York has to take a Shanahan combination into consideration. Obviously, he doesn’t want to be known as a coach killer. Firing Kelly after one season would be an incredibly bad look. But if you’re keeping Kelly for the sake of credibility and you and your advisors have truly lost belief in his coaching abilities, York has to at least evaluate a headset change.
Here’s the full Shanahan to San Francisco article.
Stay tuned. Because if the 49ers do lose 15 games in a row, Kelly really might not be coming back.
