With the season essentially lost before the All-Star break, the Giants continue to call up prospects to see exactly what their farm system has to offer as the trade deadline approaches.
The latest of those will be Double-A infielder Miguel Gomez, according to a report from Roger Munter of McCovey Chronicles.
Gomez, 24, has been excellent with Double-A Richmond this season after an impressive campaign in Single-A last year. Gomez is hitting .305/.330/.458 with eight home runs in 78 games so far this season. Gomez has struggled in June but righted the ship on Thursday night with a double, triple and two RBIs.
Gomez has played primarily second base with the Flying Squirrels in 2017 but can also play third base and catch if need be.
Born in the Dominican Republic, Gomez was acquired by the Giants in 2011 as an international free agent, and was added to the 40-man roster after last season. Gomez is currently ranked as the Giants’ No. 29 prospect by MLB and the No. 30 prospect according to Baseball America. This will be Gomez’s first stint with a major league ball club. It is unclear at this point if Gomez will be available for Friday night’s game against the Miami Marlins.
