Giants place Jones on disabled list, activate Gillaspie

It’s a dangerous time to be a Giants’ prospect.

Days after Christian Arroyo was placed on the disabled list for the second time in the span of a few weeks with AAA Sacramento, his old roommate, 23-year-old third baseman Ryder Jones, was placed on the disabled list by the Giants.

San Francisco announced the decision to place Jones on the 10-day disabled list with less than an hour to go before the Giants kicked off a three-game set with the Miami Marlins on Friday evening.

With Jones heading to the DL, San Francisco announced it has activated infielder Conor Gillaspie, who recently completed a rehab assignment after missing time with a back injury.

Jones was hit on the wrist by a pitch on Saturday in Pittsburgh, and his move to the disabled list is retroactive to July 4.

Jones and Arroyo are both highly touted infield prospects for the Giants, and the duo spent part of the season living together in Sacramento. Arroyo appeared with the Giants in May before being sent back down, while Jones was called up to the big leagues at the end of June.

Arroyo was initially placed on the AAA disabled list in mid-June after being hit by a pitch on the hand, and when he finally returned to the Sacramento River Cats’ lineup, he was hit on the same hand and is expected to be out until September.

Other Giants’ prospects have also been bitten by the injury bug of late, as outfielder Austin Slater missed a handful of games last week with a tight hip flexor while one of the team’s top pitching prospects, Joan Gregorio, was placed on the AAA disabled list earlier this month.

After being placed on the disabled list, Gregorio was suspended for the remainder of the regular season for steroid use.

Gillaspie is not in San Francisco’s lineup on Friday, but he arrived at AT&T Park in the afternoon and should be available to come off the bench.
