There were fears he would miss the rest of the season.
But after tearing the adductor muscle in his hip on July 7, Austin Slater is back with the San Francisco Giants.
Slater injured his hip running to first base on a groundball in a game against the Miami Marlins prior to the All-Star break, and though he was expected to miss up to three months of action, he was activated to the Giants’ roster on Tuesday.
The rookie left fielder is not in San Francisco’s lineup on Tuesday, but he should be available to come off the bench against the Colorado Rockies. Starting left fielder Jarrett Parker is expected to miss the final two games of the Colorado series with an oblique injury he suffered in penultimate game of the Giants’ four-game set against St. Louis over the weekend.
The Giants also announced that they added two pitchers to the Major League roster on Tuesday, as Reyes Moronta and Roberto Gomez will join the club on the second day of its six-game road trip.
Moronta is a 24-year-old right hander and a native of the Dominican Republic who compiled a 2.92 earned run average over 34 games across three Minor League levels this season.
Gomez is a 28-year-old righty from the Dominican Republic who spent the entire 2017 season with the Sacramento River Cats, the Giants’ AAA-affiliate. Gomez started 13 games for the River Cats while making 25 appearances out of the bullpen, and he is expected to contribute in relief during September with the Giants.
Both Moronta and Gomez will be making their Major League debuts when they first appear for San Francisco.
The Giants now have 34 active players on their Major League roster, and they have yet to announce a corresponding roster move after purchasing Gomez’s contract.
