SAN FRANCISCO–The Giants and Dodgers haven’t given their fans much incentive to watch them of late.
Apparently, Mother Nature had no interest in watching the teams square off on Monday, either.
But against all odds, the National League West rivals will finally resume the first game of their three-game series at 10:50 p.m.
San Francisco’s Monday evening showdown with Los Angeles was heading straight for a postponement, but around 10 p.m., the final storm clouds passed over AT&T Park and a lengthy discussion ensued.
Mangers Bruce Bochy and Dave Roberts conferred with the umpire crew, and the Giants conferred with Major League Baseball. The game would go on.
The scheduled start time of Monday’s contest, 7:15, was pushed back 42 minutes due to an initial storm that passed over AT&T Park, but the teams did take the field for a brief period.
Giants’ rookie right-hander Chris Stratton threw five pitches on Monday, and struck out Dodgers’ leadoff man Curtis Granderson with a curveball to record the game’s only out. By the time shortstop Corey Seager reached the batter’s box, rain began pouring again, and the umpires cleared the field.
Nearly three hours later, the game will resume, and Seager will finally have his at-bat.
But instead of facing Stratton, Seager will battle left-hander Ty Blach, who will enter the game as a reliever in the top of the first inning.
What an outing for Stratton by the way. He struck out every batter he faced.
