SAN FRANCISCO–It’s never too late for a splash hit.
At 11:03 p.m. on Monday night, San Francisco Giants’ center fielder Denard Span came to the plate and smashed a 1-1 offering from Dodgers’ right-hander Kenta Maeda into McCovey Cove to give the Giants a 2-0 lead.
On most nights, a home run at that time of night would be enough to send the Giants and their fans home with a win. On Monday, all Span’s home run did was give the Giants the lead in the first inning.
San Francisco and Los Angeles resumed play after a 2:52 rain delay on Monday at 10:50 p.m., and that rain delay came after a 42-minute rain delay pushed back the start time of the contest to 7:57 p.m.
It’s late and these teams probably shouldn’t be playing baseball, but this game has the potential to be the most lit matchup of the season. There are only a few thousand fans left, but those that stayed have been rewarded for their passion.
Span’s splash hit was the fifth of his career, and the 76th hit by a Giants’ player in AT&T Park history.
