The Oakland Raiders are bringing back their former head coach.
That’s a line you’ve already heard this offseason, as Oakland announced that Jon Gruden will lead the Raiders next year after the franchise fired head coach Jack Del Rio following a 6-10 season. However, for the second time this offseason, the Raiders have hired a former head coach, as Tom Cable is reportedly set to return to Oakland and work under Gruden as the team’s offensive line coach.

Cable served as the Raiders’ offensive line coach in 2007 and 2008 before he was promoted to interim head coach following the firing of Lane Kiffin. Cable then led the Raiders in 2009 and 2010, and finished with a 17-27 record before former owner Al Davis elected not to renew Cable’s contract.
Since leaving the Raiders, Cable has spent seven seasons in Seattle where he coached the Seahawks’ offensive line, a unit that came under heavy scrutiny for its inability to protect quarterback Russell Wilson over the last several years. Cable was fired after the conclusion of the 2017 regular season, but like Gruden, he’s now set to return to a familiar workplace.
