SCOTTSDALE — The San Francisco Giants almost made it through spring training without a scratch.
Almost.
After giving up two home runs in his most recent appearance in a minor league game against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, Jeff Samardzija had an MRI on his shoulder and got it examined before Thursday night’s game.
“He’s getting it looked at as we speak,” Bruce Bochy said. “He already had an MRI.”
Samardzija has struggled through spring training, specifically with keeping the ball in the park. In four starts and 11 innings, he’s given up six home runs which contributed to his 10.64 ERA.
“Right now, to be honest, we are getting Samardzija looked at,” Bochy said. “It’s his shoulder that he’s getting looked at. He had an MRI. I can’t give you anything until maybe after the game until the doctor looks at it and evaluates it.”
Bochy indicated that, since it’s yet to be seen the extend of Samardzija’s injury, there have not been any decisions made regarding the fourth and fifth spots in the rotation.
“Obviously, there could be something there that we need to make an adjustment,” Bochy added.
All spring, Ty Blach, Chris Stratton, and Derek Holland have led the conversation for those two starting spots, but Samardzija’s shoulder throws the rotation into uncertainty.
In any event, Bochy said the Giants aren’t looking outside the organization for additional starting pitcher. If any adjustments need to be made, it’ll come internally and potentially open the door for Andrew Suarez or Tyler Beede to see the major leagues sooner than expected.
