SAN FRANCISCO — It’s not everyday that a major leaguer goes 6-for-7 at the plate, much less hit a walk-off three-run home run in the 14th inning.
On Saturday night, McCutchen did both.
“I got pitches and I hit them,” McCutchen said. “That’s what happens. When you get a hit, most time it’s the pitch you want and that you’re seeing. When you swing the bat, more times than not you’re hitting it. So that’s what I was able to do today.”
Before Saturday, McCutchen’s best game came in May of 2014, where he went 5-for-5 with a home run against the Chicago Cubs. Other than that, he boasted eight four-hit games in his career.
McCutchen set a new career-high with six hits in Saturday’s game, starting with four singles and a double. His last hit of the night was a three-run home run in the 14th inning that sealed the Giants’ 7-5 victory over the Dodgers. His phenomenal game bumped his batting average from .083 to .258.
“Oh yeah,” McCutchen said when asked if he knew it was a home run right away. “It’s one thing guys know, when you hit a homer, you know how it feels. It felt good for sure”
As one of the newest members of the Giants, McCutchen happy to send the fans at AT&T Park with smiles on their faces.
“I think it’s more for the fans, honestly, than anything,” McCutchen said. “It’s great coming over here and the fans have been awesome since I got here. So, for the people who stayed around and watched that game, it was awesome to be able to do that in front of this fanbase.”
