Free agent safety Eric Reid has played well in his first few years in the league, all five of which came in a San Francisco 49ers uniform.
After earning Pro Bowl honors in 2013, his rookie season, Reid continued to anchor the back end of the 49ers’ defense.
Despite his solid performance over the past five seasons, the 49ers decided not to pursue an extension with Reid, and he became a free agent after the 2017 season. Despite being one of the top free agent safeties on the market, Reid is still unsigned.
However, according to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo (h/t Niner Noise), that doesn’t mean he hasn’t received any contract offers.
Garafolo reported Monday on NFL Network that the 49ers offered Reid a one-year contract for the 2018 season, but Reid refused it, opting to search for a longer-term deal.
Reid has scheduled a visit with the Cincinnati Bengals, which could lead to the longer-term deal he desires.
Two weeks ago, 49ers general manager John Lynch didn’t rule out the possibility of Reid re-joining the team. It’s unclear if San Francisco offered Reid a contract before or after these comments.
“Eric played and played well for us last year,” Lynch said. “I think he’s stuck in a safety market that’s been quiet. And I would anticipate things starting to shake for him and we’ll see.
“I’d never say never. I really do think opportunities will start to come his way. We’ve been monitoring it closely and we’ll see how that shakes out.”
