Giants pitcher Johnny Cueto has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation, the club announced before it’s game on Tuesday. This will be the second trip to the DL for Cueto already this season, after missing two weeks with an ankle issue in early April.
Cueto, 32, has been rolling so far this season after a disappointing 2017, posting a 3-0 record and 0.84 ERA — the best in the major leagues — in five starts. Apparently Cueto has been dealing with discomfort in his throwing elbow for the past few starts according to general manager Bobby Evans.
“We are getting our heads wrapped around it now,” Evans told Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic. “We’re still trying to understand where he’s at.”
An extended absence for Cueto would be another blow to the Giants rotation, that has been without ace Madison Bumgarner for the entire season. Surprisingly, San Francisco’s group of make shift starters has fared quite well through 29 games, posting a 3.91 ERA good for 13th best in the majors.
