The San Francisco Giants had a promising start to the second game of their series with the Colorado Rockies, as Gorkys Hernandez led them off with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. Unfortunately for the Giants, it would prove to be the their only run of the game.
Meanwhile, Rockies first baseman Ian Desmond, who entered Friday’s game with a batting average well under .200, contributed a three-run home run of his own to left-center to give the Rockies a 3-1 lead in the fourth. He added a run-scoring double in the sixth, and ultimately powered the Rockies to a 6-1 win.
Derek Holland mostly had a solid start for the Giants, except for the two mistakes he made to Desmond. He allowed six hits and just one walk on 112 pitches in six innings pitched.
The Giants’ next best chance to score came in the seventh, when Brandon Belt stepped to the plate as a pinch-hitter with two on and two out. Looking to continue his streak of homering in four straight games, Belt was instead called out on strikes to end the inning.
The Rockies added two more cosmetic runs in the ninth on a Charlie Blackmon home run to right off Jose Valdez.
The Giants have been an unbelievably streaky team of late, and right now, they’re participating in the wrong kind of streak. After rebounding from losing six games in a row to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia to win three straight, they have now lost three straight, thus effectively neutralizing their bounce-back three-game win streak, which brought them back above .500 after their six-game losing streak dropped them to 19-21.
