SAN FRANCISCO — Brandon Crawford will be making his way to Washington D.C. during the All-Star break for the 2018 MLB All-Star Game as the starting shortstop for the National League. Crawford garnered 3,212,103 votes on his way to earning the starting nod at short.
After Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals, Crawford thanked baseball fans across the country for voting him in as an All-Star.
“Whenever you get that much fan support, it’s definitely special,” Crawford said. “So I’m excited. Definitely appreciate all the votes from the fans, whether it was Giants fans or from around the country. Should be a lot of fun.”
He also reflected on what it will mean for him to start the game instead of being a reserve, as he was during his only other All-Star appearance in 2015.
“It’s exciting,” Crawford said. “I mean like you said, I went before as a reserve, and that was awesome. But to be able to be in that starting lineup is going to make it even more special.”
Giants catcher Buster Posey, who was selected to this year’s All-Star Game as a reserve, praised Crawford’s first-half performance and noted how deserving he is for the selection.
“Yeah, it’s been fun to watch,” Posey said. “Obviously, his glove has been elite for quite some time now. And the way he’s swung the bat this year, he’s definitely deserving to be there.”
Posey lost narrowly to Cubs catcher Willson Contreras in the fan vote to become the NL’s starting catcher, but was voted in as a reserve by his fellow MLB players. He reflected on what that recognition means to him.
“That’s definitely a humbling gesture I guess to be voted on anything by your peers,” Posey said. “And definitely grateful for it.”
