SAN FRANCISCO — Johnny Cueto lasted just four innings and 61 pitches Saturday night against the Milwaukee Brewers, surrendering four runs during his time on the mound. Cueto’s start was hampered by some bad luck, but also by a right elbow injury that has plagued him throughout the 2018 season.
And after Saturday’s game, Cueto and Giants manager Bruce Bochy made it clear that Cueto’s future in the rotation is in jeopardy.
“It’s very hard to get loose,” Cueto said. “I feel really bad. I surely want to try and help the team. I want to go out there like a warrior and give my best, but I keep telling you guys and I keep telling myself that I’m fine, but in reality, I’m not. And I just feel sad that I can’t help, and it’s very difficult every time I go out there. Every time I throw a pitch, it bothers me.”
Cueto noted that he will meet with Giants doctors to determine his next step.
“I’m going to meet with the doctors tomorrow,” Cueto said. “They’re gonna check my arm, and then we’ll go from there and see what decision I make.”
Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated that the club is concerned about Cueto’s injury.
“I gotta be honest: sure, there’s concern there for Johnny,” Bochy said. “We know how good he is, and it’s just not quite there, but he just competes so well. And like I said, even without his best stuff, he just had some bad luck.”
