Earlier today, Andrew McCutchen was joking about last night’s Giants vs. Dodgers brawl. “Let’s just play baseball, not fight,” McCutchen said. He was all business on Wednesday night and came through when the Giants needed him most.
In the eighth inning, the Giants trailed the Dodgers 3-0. They’d managed just three hits through seven innings until Hunter Pence led the eighth off with a single and Chase d’Arnaud walked. The predictable hero, Nick Hundley – who hit a two-out, lead-taking single in the ninth inning on Monday and was at the heart of yesterday’s scuffle – struck out.
Then McCutchen stepped up. On the second pitch of the at-bat, he tore a ball high to left-center field and it dropped over the fence to tie the game at 3-3. The home run was McCutchen’s 14th of the year and forced another crucial ninth inning in a series between the Giants and Dodgers that has been constantly exciting.
