49ers to sign running back ahead of preseason finale [report]

The 49ers are slated to sign the best running back in Humboldt State history, Ja’Quan Gardner, before their preseason finale with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to a report from Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

“If Gardner passes his physical, San Francisco will sign him, a league source said,” writes Maiocco.

The 49ers are making the signing due to a running back corps depleted by injuries. Jerick McKinnon (calf) and Matt Breida (shoulder), who would be unlikely to play in the final preseason game anyway, are working their way back from injuries and hoping to be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Joe Williams is questionable after fracturing his rib vs. the Texans on Aug. 18.

Alfred Morris and Raheem Mostert are likely to make the team and will both probably see limited playing time. If signed, Gardner is expected to split playing time with Jeremy McNichols and undrafted rookie running back Jeff Wilson.

Gardner (5-foot-7, 205 pounds) holds Humboldt State records for most career rushing yards (5,426) and touchdowns (93), and single-season rushing yards (2,266) and touchdowns (25).
