Klay Thompson’s record-breaking 3-point explosion on Monday night was incredibly fun, but things got a bit uncomfortable for Warriors head coach Steve Kerr.
With Golden State up by 45 points (yes, 45) over the Bulls midway through the third quarter, Thompson was one made 3-pointer away from breaking the single game record. The entire Warriors team began to furiously force-feed Klay the ball, but all of the sudden, he couldn’t make a shot.
“I think he missed four in a row if I’m not mistaken, and that’s when it got uncomfortable,” Kerr said. “I mean everything up until that point, it was early third (quarter) basically and he goes from 10 to 13 (made 3s) in a heartbeat.
“As soon as he was at 13 and it’s 5-6 minutes left in the 3rd, and everybody is throwing the ball to him and setting screens for him and he misses and misses again…It did get a little uncomfortable and I was so happy he made that last one.”
Kerr also said that had Klay not hit his 14th in the third quarter, he would have pulled him out of the game out of respect for the Bulls.
“I wouldn’t have allowed him to play in the fourth. If he hadn’t made one in the third I would have just taken him out and to Klay’s credit he would have understood too. That may have been why he was rushing those four that he missed because he knew he was coming out.”
