It’s hard to imagine that Kevin Durant won’t one day have a statue outside of Chase Center. Already a two-time NBA Finals MVP, it’s very likely that KD will finish his career in Golden State with three titles to his name, even if he leaves the Bay Area this summer.
Durant sat down with KNBR’s Bob Fitzgerald on Tuesday and was asked what he’d like his statue to look like if he is one-day immortalized in front of the Warriors’ new San Francisco arena.
“For me I think it’d be only fitting if I just was shooting a one-legged Dirk (Nowitzki) fadeaway as a statue,” Durant told Fitz. “That might be my silhouette. Like (Michael) Jordan has his own silhouette, I might need a silhouette of that, because that just defined a lot of my game and a lot of shots I took throughout my career.
“Not to say my career like it’s over, but I can remember so many times I made that shot and it’s like, I know I took it from Dirk, but I kind of added my little flavor and sauce to it, so I pay homage along the way to Dirk, but I kind of feel like that’s mine now.”
Durant also reflected on how the Bay Area will think of these Warriors teams decades from now.
“To win back-to-back championships, I’m just thinking to myself ‘man, in 10-20 years, I wonder how they’ll be talking about our run and what we did.’ I wonder when all the dust settles and all the noise settles, I wonder what people will be saying about us in the Bay Area, that’s all. Nowhere else, just the Bay. And I think they might show us a little bit of love out there, especially all the guys that have been on championship teams that contributed as big as we did.
“I know the ownership wants to honor a lot of guys, so I’m just like that’d be amazing just knowing how much they care about their sports and their players that play for their team.”
