During one of his final visits to what was then AT&T Park, late Giants owner Peter Magowan apologized to outfielder Mac Williamson for the bullpen mounds that contributed to a concussion Williamson sustained during the 2018 season, according to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Williamson tripped over one of the home mounds down the left-field line on April 24, and crashed head-first into the wall. Williamson returned to the field for stints in May and June, but was ultimately shut down after continuing to experience symptoms related to the injury.

Magowan told Williamson that commissioner Bud Selig saw the mounds as a potential hazard when the Giants were completing their ballpark, but that the small space left them without options, something that is still true today. Williamson has spoken to Larry Baer about the issue.

“For him to take the time to apologize, he didn’t have to do that,” Williamson said of Magaowan’s gesture. “That meant a lot.”

Magowan passed away in his Pacific Heights home on January 27 of this year. He was 76.

Williamson entered camp symptom free and is expected to compete for a spot on the Giants opening day roster.
