The 49ers sent out the following press release Friday morning:
The San Francisco 49ers today announced they have signed K Jonathan Brown to a two-year deal.
Brown (5-10, 195) originally entered the NFL in 2016 after signing with the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 8, 2016. He was waived by Cincinnati on August 30, 2016 and later re-signed with the team on January 20, 2017. Following his release on August 1, 2017, he was signed to the Bengals practice squad on December 28, 2017, and later signed a Reserve/Future contract on January 1, 2018. He connected on all six of his field goal attempts during the 2018 preseason with the Bengals, including a 55-yard attempt, prior to being waived on September 1, 2018.
A 26-year-old native of Clinton, MS, Brown attended the University of Louisville for four years (2012-15) after transferring from the University of Kentucky in 2011. He began his collegiate career playing soccer at Kentucky and later joined Louisville’s soccer program. Brown joined the Cardinals football program in 2014 and served as a kicker on team’s kickoff unit.
San Francisco just placed the one-year franchise tag on Robbie Gould, so it is assumed that Brown’s deal is non-guaranteed, and that he’s likely being brought in as competition in training camp and the preseason. Gould made 33-of-34 field goals last season, is still considered one of the best kickers in the NFL.
