Garcia was (at one point) expected to make the roster after the release of Rene Rivera. With the additions of Tom Murphy and Erik Kratz, the Giants have added last-minute competition to back-up Buster Posey.
Garcia struggled this spring, hitting .216/.341/.459 in 37 at-bats. Last season he impressed after his promotion to the major leagues, hitting .286/.306/.800 with four home runs and nine RBI’s in 63 at-bats.
Following the latest moves to the catcher position, the choice to option Garcia could have been due to the remaining three options he has left. There’s a chance the team decides to keep three catchers on the 25-man roster, but that remains unknown.
For the remaining few days before the start of the season, it seems that the backup job will come down to Murphy or Kratz.
