SAN FRANCISCO – On Monday night, the Giants saw their first grand slam since April 7, 2017. It came off the very same San Diego Padres as it did in 2017.
The newly-acquired Giant, Kevin Pillar, has struggled offensively since joining the team, until tonight.
In the bottom of the bottom of the fourth inning, Pillar came to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs, after an intentional walk to Yangervis Solarte. A 2-0 count set up a grand slam, which was Pillar’s first home run as a Giant, and the first grand slam of his career. The struggling center fielder was hitting .125 with two hits in 16 at-bats before his fourth-inning blast.
Pillar was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays last Tuesday. Both Pillar and Tyler Austin, who was traded for today, were acquired to add some right-handed power to the Giants lineup. Pillar’s grand slam gave the Giants a 5-0 lead against the Padres and provided some much needed right-handed power in a lefty-heavy Giants lineup.
