SAN FRANCISCO – The San Francisco Giants announced on Monday afternoon that they’re sending Derek Holland to the 10-day injured list after an injury that’s been affecting him since spring training.
Bochy told reporters that Holland’s left forefinger has been bothering him ever since he was hit by a ball during bunting practice back in Arizona.
Holland has started six games for the Giants this season, usually occupying the spot following a day when Madison Bumgarner starts. He’s 1-4 on the year with a 5.34 ERA and 1.313 WHIP.
Bochy said he didn’t think Holland would need more than the those 10 days to get back on the field.
The Giants called Ty Blach up from Sacramento to take Holland’s place on the roster, although it doesn’t appear Bochy will slot him into Holland’s place in the rotation.
“He’s been throwing the ball well, Blachy,” Bochy said. “Has experience up here. Right now he’s a guy that’s going to help out in the bullpen. We had some pretty heavy bullpen usage in that last series. So we just feel that we need a little help there. Especially tonight, we get to a point where we could be risking injury with some of these guys because of their workload.
“But he’s a guy that we can use – a swing guy. You know Ty Blach. He can pitch out of the pen or start.”
Blach has started four games for Triple-A Sacramento. He’s won one, lost none, and has a 4.34 ERA on the year.
Bochy gave no serious indication of who would start in Holland’s place. The Giants have an off day Thursday, so hypothetically they could skip Holland’s next start day and keep the rotation as it was – a move Bochy said the team is considering.
