Dereck Rodriguez is back in the majors. After Trevor Gott was tagged for three earned runs over two thirds of an inning in the Giants’ historically bad 18-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks last night, Gott was diagnosed with a right forearm strain, leaving a spot open for Rodriguez to make his return.
At one point last night, Gott walked in a run, which is something uncharacteristic of him this season. He has been one of the Giants’ most consistent relievers this season, with his ERA rising from 1.93 to 3.00 after last night’s performance. Even with that, his walks per nine innings is a career-low 2.3, while he has a rate of 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings, a career high. He also maintains a 0.833 WHIP. This leaves the Giants, still reeling from their 13-inning 5-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, shorthanded in the bullpen.
Giants are facing an innings coverage issue today. They say RHP Trevor Gott has a right forearm strain. He's on the IL. RHP Dereck Rodriguez recalled from Sacramento.

However, it gives Rodriguez a chance to show that he’s recovered from a dreadful start to the season in San Francisco. In the majors this year, he has a 5.05 ERA. He’s pitched just 7 2/3 innings with the Sacramento River Cats this season, during which he’s given up nine hits, nine runs (three earned), walked four, and allowed one home run.
