Steve Kerr is preparing to coach the Warriors in the team’s fifth-straight NBA Finals appearance. If there’s one thing he’s not concerned about, it’s Toronto rapper and Raptors semi-mascot Drake.
On Monday, Kerr was asked about Drake, who was covered incessantly for his antics in the Eastern Conference Finals for yelling at Giannis Antetokounmpo, his unhinged postgame interview, and his massaging of Raptors head coach Nick Nurse’s shoulders during the game while he roamed free along the sidelines, among other things.
He drew the most attention a single basketball fan has attracted in a major playoff series since maybe Spike Lee for the New York Knicks against the Indiana Pacers in the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals and 1995 Eastern Conference Semifinals. That ended with the infamous “choke” sign from Reggie Miller after he scored 8 points in the final 8.9 seconds to down the Knicks in Game 1 of the 1995 Semifinals.
“I’m not worried about Drake,” Kerr said. “I called him on his cell phone earlier… my daughter’s rolling her eyes right now like, ‘Dad, no more dad jokes please.’”
Kerr was of course joking, and referring to the hook from Drake’s single, “Hotline Bling,” with the line, “You used to call me on my cell phone.”
