When Mac Williamson was called up for the Giants at the start of May, there was an understanding that it could be his last chance to prove himself with the Giants in the majors. After suffering a season-ending concussion last year, Williamson was performing well with the Triple-A Sacramento River Cats, but was out of options to be recalled to the minors if he wasn’t performing for the Giants.

After a blistering start with a homer run and 4 RBIs in his first game, Williamson failed to continue that momentum. By the time he was designated for assignment after striking out eight times over a two-game span on May 23 and May 24, he was batting .118 with a slugging percentage of .196. Williamson was not traded and cleared waivers, so as a player with three years of MLB service time, he had the option to either accept a likely designation back with the River Cats or declare for free agency. Williamson chose the latter, effectively ending his tenure with the club.

In other news, after two abysmal starts which combined for 4 innings pitched, 14 hits and 8 earned runs, Drew Pomeranz has been pushed out of the Giants rotation, and may operate out of the bullpen as a long reliever starting on Sunday, according to Kerry Crowley. Shaun Anderson will start for the Giants on Saturday.

Lastly, the Giants’ pitching coach Curt Young has been noticeably absent in recent games, with Matt Herges stepping in for him to make mound visits. According to Hank Schulman, Young underwent knee surgery, and Herges will continue to operate as pitching coach until Young has recovered.
