Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has never been one to shy away from discussing massive social issues, especially when it relates to gun violence. Kerr has been an outspoken advocate for rewriting the nation’s gun laws in the wake of a number of mass shootings, the most recent of which occurred in Virginia Beach, Virginia on Friday, May 31, and resulted in the deaths of at least 12 people, most of whom were coworkers of the shooter.
Kerr wore a “Vote For Our Lives” t-shirt to his pregame press conference on Sunday, which took place less than two hours before the Warriors were schedule to take on the Toronto Raptors in Game 2 of the Finals in Toronto. Kerr said the decision to wear the shirt was to honor the victims of the shooting, in the hopes of preventing a similar tragedy.
“The shirt is a reminder that the only way we can actually get out of this mess is to actually vote and vote for people who are going to be willing to create some change in our gun laws in our country,” Kerr said. “The young generation, the March For Our Lives generation, has really inspired me. I offer my support to them, and to all young people in the hope that we can create a change where we don’t all have to walk around scared we’re going to get shot in our country.”
