With a hard cap of $138.9 million in place that the Warriors cannot exceed, Golden State was thought to have around $17 million to spend on four or five spots. It seemed like that predicament might put the Warriors out of the running to re-sign Looney, who proved to be a key part of the rotation in Golden State’s road to the Finals last season.
Signing Looney, 23, at $5 million per year should be seen as a huge win for the Warriors. He is expected to be part of a starting group that will include Stephen Curry, D’Angelo Russell, and Draymond Green to start the season while Klay Thompson recovers from a torn ACL. All that seemingly remains for the Warriors to figure out is who will start at small forward.
