Just because the Giants reportedly aren’t selling, doesn’t mean they won’t still part with a left-handed reliever at the trade deadline. Who that’s going to be is anybody’s guess, but an unexpected name has surfaced in recent days: Starter-turned-reliever Drew Pomeranz.
On Monday, it was reported that teams around the league are unexpectedly interested in acquiring the 30-year-old, who posted an appalling 6.10 ERA in 17 starts. Since being sent to the ‘pen, however, Pomeranz has turned heads by striking out six in 4 1/3 scoreless relief innings. According to Jon Morosi, one of the interested teams is the Washington Nationals, who are currently in discussions with the Giants.
Sources: #SFGiants, #Nats have discussed Drew Pomeranz, who has thrown 4-1/3 scoreless IP since moving to the bullpen. @Ken_Rosenthal was first to report trade activity on Pomeranz yesterday. @MLB @MLBNetwork

Once considered one of the best starters in baseball, Pomeranz hasn’t looked the same since a disastrous 2017 season with the Boston Red Sox. Still, Pomeranz has shown an ability to get out left-handed batters throughout his career (LBH have a .628 career OPS) a skill every contending bullpen is seeking. What the Giants could get in exchange for Pomeranz is hard to calculate, but San Francisco has a surplus of talented lefties in their bullpen, making any return probably worth moving him.
