PHILADELPHIA — The Giants were losing a game, lost a glove and nearly lost a center fielder.
In the fourth inning of Thursday’s matinee at Citizens Bank Park, J.T. Realmuto hit a long drive to center with two Phillies on base. Kevin Pillar tracked it to the wall and then leapt, crashing hard at near full speed. The ball was a touch too far, and the force of the smack cost him his glove over the wall. He crumpled to the warning track as Philadelphia rounded the bases for a 9-0 lead.
The Giants medical staff checked on Pillar, who stayed on the game. He did some pacing in the aftermath, trying to shake off what looked like a painful moment.
