Giants shutting down Trevor Gott a while, but not writing season off

Trevor Gott’s stint on the injured list will last longer than the 10 days. The Giants hope it won’t stretch too much longer than that, though.

The righty reliever, one of the survivors of a bullpen that has seen so much change this season, has a Grade 1 strain of his flexor and sprain of his UCL in his throwing elbow. The plan, for now, is to shut him down for two weeks and then reassess.

Bruce Bochy didn’t believe surgery to be a possibility (yet) for a 27-year-old who had missed time from late May to early June with a right forearm strain.

“I expect to see him again before the season’s over,” Bochy said Tuesday before the Giants played the Diamondbacks at Oracle Park.

The manager called the strain and sprain “mild.” Gott incurred it Monday night, when he threw 34 pitches — his most since March 29 — and loaded the bases in the seventh inning. After his 34th pitch — a 92-mph fastball, a bit down from his usual velocity — a Giants trainer immediately walked to the mound and Gott was lifted.

Gott, an under-the-radar Farhan Zaidi discovery, was acquired for cash from the Nationals in February and has been one of the more reliable pieces of one of the best bullpens in baseball. His 4.44 ERA is a bit bloated because of a few blow-ups, but his 1.101 WHIP hints at a strong future.

Gott is under team control through 2023, not even hitting arbitration until 2021.
