The Giants might not be playing for anything anymore, but between this Boston series and Bruce Bochy’s final homestand, they’re packing in the moments.
Mike Yastrzemski will be front and center — er, front and left — as the Fenway Park face-off begins Tuesday. The Giants have moved the outfielder from his typical right field to left, and there will be another Yastrzemski patrolling the area in front of the Green Monster for the first time in 36 years.
Carl Yastrzemski retired after his 1983 season — yet another All-Star year for the legendary Red Sox Hall of Famer. His grandson, who toiled for so long in Baltimore’s system before the spring trade to the Giants, will follow in his legacy.
Mike and Carl greeted each other before the game, and this whole set promises to be overwhelming for Mike, who grew up nearby and whose family will be swarming Fenway Park.
As the Giants released their lineup, it became clear they would make sure this road trip is special for some others, too. Chris Shaw, who went to Boston College, is getting his first start of the season (as the DH). Mauricio Dubon also is penciled in to bat ninth and play second, and he spent a lot of time in the Red Sox organization. (Dubon told KNBR his first move, when the Giants arrived in Boston, would be to go out with Rafael Devers, who knows where the best Dominican food is.)
Figure that Shaun Anderson — who came over from Boston in a trade — will get a look this series. The only one potentially missing out is Tyler Beede, who’s from Massachusetts but who was bumped to get Madison Bumgarner on track for Bochy’s finale.
