The San Francisco Giants are seven spring training games into Gabe Kapler’s tenure as manager. The skipper hopped on with Murph & Mac on Friday and pointed to three players, and one big picture element that has stood out thus far.
On Joey Bart:
“I think Joey Bart is standing out as a guy who is making adjustments every single day. One of those adjustments is with his body language. He’s carrying himself in a way that looks like a leader out there. He’s swinging the bat really well, driving the baseball, so that’s good.”
On Johnny Cueto:
“You mentioned Johnny Cueto, his last live BP session was awesome. He’s healthy, that’s number one. He controls his body very well, so he’s got kind of the pause, start-stop delivery so he’s able to maintain his command when he does and really deliver strong strikes.”
On Tyler Beede:
“Tyler Beede was excellent yesterday. He looked like a top of the rotation starter. Now, whether or not he is ultimately is up to him, but we’ve asked him to land his curveball for strikes, to utilize his changeup. He attacked the strike zone yesterday, he’s really caught in.”
On the new coaching staff:
“To me what stands out most across camp, is how our coaches have built environments for our players to flourish and develop. If you look at our cage right now we have three high-level hitting coaches with eyeballs on our players at all times, making good simple suggestions, utilizing all the tools available to them to make our players better. Our bullpen sessions we have technology, but we also have three pitching coaches.
“Our environments are really fertile for growth and our guys are really buying in. Our veteran players are asking for new and asking for challenging. It’s a huge thing.”
