The NFL free agency period started Monday and so did the first rumor involving a player the 49ers might look to bring in.
Interestingly, this rumor came from the player himself. According to Josina Anderson of ESPN, former Patriots and Colts wide receiver Phillip Dorsett says the 49ers are one of five teams showing “preliminary interest” in signing him in free agency, including the Jets, Seahawks, Chargers and Raiders.
Dorsett, 27, was selected with the 29th overall pick by Indianapolis out of the University of Miami in 2015. At 5-foot-10, Dorsett has the size of a slot receiver but the versatility to also act as a deep threat. Dorsett appeared in 14 games with the Patriots last season, catching 29 passes for 397 yards.
Dorsett has never started more than seven games in a season, and would be seen as a cheap rotation option with high upside.
