The Giants haven’t made any head turning moves this offseason (at least when it comes to bringing players in), but they may have just made an acquisition on Monday that we’ll be talking about years from now.
San Francisco inked 16-year-old Dominican prospect Javier Alexander Francisco Estrella as first reported by @Giantsprospects. MLB reporter Hector Gomez confirmed the report with photos on Tuesday.
Estrella has been compared to Dominican standout Fernando Tatis Jr., by none other than Tatis Jr.’s father, who played 11 seasons in the major leagues.
“There is a lot of similarity between them at the same age,” Tatis Sr. said to Gomez in June 2019. “Javier has an excellent displacement, tremendous arm, a fluid and clean swing — he hits the ball very well from all sides and he knows how to play the game. Those are the conditions that are needed to play a position as demanding as the shortstop and Javier has them.
“As a manager, that’s the type of player that I like.”
Here’s an example:
Tatis Jr. had a stellar rookie season with the Padres, posting a slash line of .317/.379/.590 with 22 home runs.
