One of the main takeaways from the NFL Combine was John Lynch’s acknowledgment that the 49ers were working with Jerick McKinnon’s representatives on a restructured deal. After signing a three-year, $30 million deal, McKinnon tore his ACL a week before the 2018 regular season and was unable to overcome complications in his recovery in the 2019 preseason and has played zero regular season games.

Cutting McKinnon’s deal as is would have saved the 49ers roughly $4 million in cap space in the 2020 season and even more in 2021. Lynch said in Indianapolis that the 49ers were working on a contract restructure, which is the only viable way to have him return to the team.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, McKinnon and the 49ers have agreed on a restructured deal which will keep him with the 49ers for at least the 2020 season. It’s unclear what the numbers are as of yet, but it’s likely McKinnon took a pay-cut, which he implied he was open to when he said he was “willing to do whatever” to remain on the team.
