The 49ers were looking for another tight end, and while the Patriots took two of the best in UCLA’s Devin Asiasi and Virginia Tech’s Dalton Keene, San Francisco found itself with a sneaky pick at No. 190 overall: the University of Georgia’s Charlie Woerner.

They acquired that pick in a trade up with the Philadelphia Eagles, when they moved Marquise Goodwin and Pick 210 for Pick 190.

Woerner was one of the three tight ends included in Saturday’s list of potential players that could be drafted by the 49ers. He wasn’t on many draft board because of his lack of production, but he does a lot of what the 49ers love in a tight end. He’s a blocker first, played a lot of H-back, and has surprising athleticism. He also projects as a decent wide receiver because of his release off the line, and could be a replacement for Kyle Juszczyk in the future, as proven by the way he was used at Georgia. It’s clear he has versatility.

Here’s the assessment of Woerner from that earlier piece:

This kid loves to block. He was a captain for Georgia and absolutely thrives on plowing through opponents in the run game. He’s got a little versatility to him, with some H-Back potential, but has very short arms. His production as a receiving tight end was almost nonexistent (34 total passes, 376 yards, 1 TD at Georgia), but his burst off the line provides cause for optimism that he could get himself open there. He does lack a little bit of wiggle, but he’s viewed as a seventh round or undrafted prospect, and his blocking upside might be worth it.

He tested very highly in the broad jump, where George Kittle was immense. It’s one of the athletic tests that the 49ers rate very highly. Now, he’s unlikely to be an immediate No. 2 behind Kittle, but he was a leader at Georgia (captain for two games), where he was the co-winner of the Frank Sinkwich Award (toughest player on the team), and has a serviceable floor as an athletic blocker.
