Joe Staley’s NFL future is looking like it might not have much time left. According to Ian Rapoport, the 49ers will trade the Washington Redskins a 2021 third round pick and the 49ers’ 156th overall pick in the fifth round this year in order to get him. Head coach Kyle Shanahan coached Williams in Washington from 2010-2013 when he was the offensive coordinator there.

NBC Sports’ Matt Maiocco said on KNBR on Thursday that “I kinda doubt” that Staley returns to the 49ers this year, despite having two years remaining on his contract from the extension he signed before the start of last season. This move explains why the 49ers passed on taking Iowa tackle Tristan Wirfs in the first round.

Williams is due $14.5 million next year, and is the final year of his contract. He sat out all of last year after making seven-straight Pro Bowls. The obvious remaining question is, when will Staley retire? It could well be this offseason, as he’s due $14.5 million and the 49ers are prioritizing a massive contract extension for tight end George Kittle.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers will restructure Williams’ deal.
