Trent Williams has been a favorite of 49ers fans well before last weekend’s trade that made him a member of the Red and Gold.
During a period of time when Richard Sherman was public enemy number one in the Bay Area, Williams punched the then Seahawks cornerback in the face after a 2013 playoff loss, a game in which Sherman happened to be mic’d up. The moment went viral, with many members of the faithful certainly enjoying living vicariously through Williams while watching it.
But now the two future Hall of Famers are teammates, and though the hatchet seemed to be buried when the two interacted on Twitter following the trade, Williams told reporters he and Sherman have been on good terms since the night of the squabble.
“Well, a lot of people don’t know this, but me and Sherm, we talked that night after that incident, and we kind of buried the hatchet then,” Williams said in his first video conference with Bay Area media. “So we’ve, since then, built a good relationship over the past seven years.”
The 49ers have built one of the strongest locker rooms in the NFL since John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan took over four years ago. With both Joe Staley and DeForest Buckner now gone, Sherman and Williams enter the 2020 season as two veterans who will be looked at to provide leadership. It’s good to know they’re on the same page.
“You know he’s one of the guys I talk to a lot in the offseason, seen him a few times, so we’ve been good friends for a minute. I’m kind of happy to be on a team with him.”
