The coronavirus has taken away a former Oakland Athletics prospect.
Miguel Marte, a former infielder and outfielder who played in the A’s system from 2008-12, died Tuesday due to complications with COVID-19, the team announced Friday. He was 30.
Marte, from the Dominican Republic, reached Low-A ball before his professional career ended, playing catcher, first base and right field. The pandemic has claimed nearly a quarter-million lives across the globe, and not just the most vulnerable members of society.
A GoFundMe was set up for Marte’s family, for whom he was the main provider.
Marte is survived by his wife, Jasmin, and twins Isabella and Miguel Angel.
