Comment thread of Giants fans slamming Bumgarner pick in 2007 hilarious reminder draft is a crapshoot

Have some hot takes on the Giants draft picks from the last two days? We’d never discourage you from firing them off (in fact we’d encourage it), but just know if someone goes digging through the receipts at decade from now you could end up looking pretty silly.

It’s for that reason that it might be best to do so under an alias, which is the only thing saving the folks (except you Doug Bruzzone) who commented on a story from popular Giants blog McCovey Chronicles in 2007, slamming the drafting of Madison Bumgarner with the 10th overall pick. Yes, the same Madison Bumgarner who put together arguably the greatest pitching performance in World Series history in 2014, not one of the many other dudes from his hometown who shares his name.

Thanks to Giants podcaster Ben Kaspick who dug up the thread and posted it on Twitter Thursday morning, we can all look back and have a good laugh at the reminder that nobody really knows anything.

In addition to fans calling for both former General Manger Brian Sabean and the entire scouting staff to be fired, more than one commenter was incensed that the Giants didn’t draft Rick Porcello (selected 27th overall) or Canadian prospect Phillippe Aumont (11th). Porcello has had a rollercoaster career, winning the Cy Young in 2016, yet never making an All-Star team in his 11 major league seasons. Aumont has been a complete bust, and was knocked out of the major leagues in 2015 after four scattershot years with the Phillies.

Other players mentioned were infielder Beau Mills (13th) who never made it to the majors and Jason Heyward (14th) who has yet to reach the heights of his monster rookie season in 2010.

They say hindsight is 20/20, but in this case it seems even a little better than that.
