Watch Giants’ second-round pick hit two jacks, get save in Cape Cod championship

The Giants drafted a well-rounded third baseman in the second round of Friday’s MLB Draft. Or did they select a closer? We’ll have to wait and see.

That’s because 49th overall pick Casey Schmitt was both of those things at San Diego State, posting a slash line of .323/.386/.452 in his junior season, and notching six saves in eight appearances while posting a 3.45 ERA. Schmitt was even more impressive on the hill in the Cape Cod League, where he knocked that ERA down to 2.45 in 11 appearances.

But if you want impressive, look no further than Schmitt’s performance in the Cape Cod league championship (video above). Schmitt hits two jacks early in the game to give the Kettlers an early lead, before closing the game out and causing the benches to clear.

Whether Schmitt is capable of being a two-way player at the major league level remains to be seen, but you can understand why a performance like that would be enough to entice the Giants to select him.
