San Francisco Mayor London Breed hopped on the Murph & Mac Show on KNBR Tuesday morning and provided some updates on when we might see professional sports return to the city.
A few weeks ago, Breed approved both the Giants and Warriors to return to holding sporting events, albeit without fans, effective immediately. The problem? The Warriors season is over, and Major League Baseball’s season remains up in the air as the players’ union and owners continue their battle over compensation.
Taking a glass half full approach, however, if MLB does sort out their squabble and agree on a season, what would the immediate future mean for the Giants in San Francisco?
“We’ve approved plans for both the Warriors and the Giants,” Breed said. “They can begin their training and they’re still working some things out I believe with the league around what that would look like, because we have not approved the ability for spectators to go in. That’s not happening until later on down the line in phase three, but in the meantime we at least want to be able to watch sports on television.
“Even if we can’t go to the ballpark right now, we’ll get there for sure but right now the ability for those sports to resume are possible. Any time it happens in San Francisco, we just approve plans with the Department of Public Health, and they still have to work with the NBA and MLB and larger groups to sort those things out, because it’s not just happening in San Francisco.
“So fingers crossed that we’ll start seeing sports this summer in some capacity. The reruns are great to watch and a reminder of history but they’re just not the same.”
Reports on Tuesday morning indicated that the PGA Championship would take place at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco as originally planned, but without fans, from Aug. 6-9. Breed says that is not yet confirmed but likely.
“It’s not confirmed. As soon as it is we will make sure that you all know. We are hopeful, we want it to happen. We just want to make sure that it happens safely and that’s what we’re working out as we speak.
“But it is likely. We are excited.”
