No one on the San Francisco Giants uses Instagram quite like Johnny Cueto does.
If you follow the lefty you know he’s always posting. Videos of workouts, videos of his kids, videos of his horses – the Dominican international documents much of his life for people to see. A couple of weeks ago he used his platform to argue balls and strikes with an old teammate, Eduardo Núñez.
Cueto and Núñez were born about an hour from each other in the southern coast of the Dominican Republic. The two linked up to play some baseball during MLB’s shutdown, and on June 10 Cueto posted a series of videos of him pitching to his former teammate.
“What do you think of this pitch? Is this a ball or a strike?” Cueto asked in one caption. “Was this pitch a ball too” he asked in another. His videos got a surprising amount of engagement from current and former major leaguers.
“Take a seat” Denard Span commented. “Nunie that was right down the middle papi!!!” George Kontos said, “You looking MUY fuerte though Nice trabajo,”
Other major leaguers like Sam Dyson, Prince Fielder, Carlos Santana, and Fernando Tatis all jumped in the fray with one thing or another. Nunez was also in the comments, defending himself for the most part, but he did tell Fernando Tatis “fue un día malo.” Translation: It was a bad day.
If this isn’t what Mark Zuckerberg had in mind when he ripped off the Winklevoss twins I don’t know what was.
And on Friday the saga continued. Cueto posted another video Friday and named it “Cueto vs. Núñez: The Rematch.”
Cueto posted two minutes of an at-bat between the two. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on, but it looks like Cueto had the upper hand.
