The Giants’ entire draft class is officially Giants.
With Thursday’s signing of third-round pick Kyle Harrison, all seven of the team’s selections have put ink to paper. Harrison, a lefty from De La Salle, reportedly signed for $2.5 million, significantly overslot to sway him out of a commitment to UCLA.
The Giants had to save funds elsewhere to be able to afford Harrison’s bonus. Fifth-round pick Ryan Murphy received just $25,000 and compensation pick Jimmy Glowenke brought in $600,000 in a slot that calls for $953,100.
The Giants chose exclusively from the collegiate ranks apart from Harrison, a top-ranked pitcher who had plenty of leverage. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Danville native was untouchable in high school and starred with Team USA, dropping in the draft because of the money he would command.
“He’s a guy that we’ve really seen his development over the last, we’ll call it eight-to-10 months,” scouting director Michael Holmes said after the draft. “We’ve seen his velocity improve, we’ve seen his breaking ball improve, and he’s always been able to command the baseball to both sides of the plate. It’s more of a three-quarter to lower-three-quarter slot with a little bit of a cross-body look, so it’s a very deceptive delivery. Hitters have a tough time seeing the baseball.
“But this kid is a smart kid on the mound. He’s got tremendous feel, he’s got good stuff. And he definitely is a really competitive kid that we had a chance to know really well, visiting with him and his family and had a definite comfort with him.”
