Play ball!
The COVID-19 test from a Giants player that postponed Friday and Saturday’s game appears to have been a false positive, and the Giants will continue their series at Petco Park with a doubleheader Sunday beginning at 1:10 p.m..
The Giants’ players and staff have been self-isolating in their San Diego hotel rooms since their game Friday was suspended minutes before it was set to begin when one Giant tested positive.
That presumptive positive, the joint MLB-MLBPA committee found, “did not represent an actual infection or present a risk to other personnel.”
Having missed a pair of games, the Giants’ schedule gets more hectic down the stretch. They will play two in San Diego on Sunday and need to make up another with the Padres, which could come Thursday in Seattle, when both teams are off and the Giants will be just finishing a series, the Padres just beginning one. They also could play a doubleheader among their final three days of the season, when the Giants and Padres will play at Oracle Park. Assuming they make the game up, the Giants will play 13 games in 13 days to finish the year.
Regardless, it is good news the club and player are healthy and good news that baseball can begin again on what will be a busy Sunday for Bay Area sports fans, with the 49ers’ season beginning.
