SCOTTSDALE — Giants camp has not changed, but it has gotten a bit less exciting.
The prospects are still around because there is no minor league camp to reassign them to, but the cuts, 25 in number, arrived Monday, signaling that there will be less Marco Luciano and more top prospects in Cactus League games, as the veterans ramp up.
There are not many big surprises among the trimmed, but lefty Conner Menez looked good Sunday and was trying to build a case to be an early call-up, either as a long reliever or starter. Jaylin Davis has had more struggles this spring training, and Gabe Kapler called the outfielder a “work in progress” Sunday, but his early demotion is a bit surprising.
What was eye-opening was an outfielder who survived the cut-down: Heliot Ramos. The 21-year-old is 9-for-21 with three homers in the Cactus League and has begun making a bid for a call-up at some point this season. He has said he thinks he’s ready, and his bat is now making that argument.
Ramos’ buddy was not as lucky. The Giants have outlined early and often that Joey Bart needs more development, and thus the catcher prospect also was reassigned. As was his catching partner from last year, Chadwick Tromp. Both Buster Posey and Curt Casali have been healthy and productive through a few weeks of camp.
Kervin Castro and Camilo Doval, a few rostered relievers, had impressed but now must do more impressing in the minors. Gregory Santos, also on the roster, was reassigned as well.
