It has been a hectic Sunday in Miami for the Giants.
They needed to clear roster space to activate Alex Wood and wanted an additional spot for a catcher after Buster Posey reported with soreness in his elbow.
Those roster slots were created by moving Jake McGee and Logan Webb to the COVID-19 injured list following the two getting their second doses of the vaccine late last week.
“Our hope is that they will be back to normal in the next day or two,” the team said before the finale at LoanDepot Park against the Marlins.
McGee threw 35 pitches Saturday and would have been off-limits to Gabe Kapler on Sunday anyway. Webb, too, would not have been touched because he is Tuesday’s expected starter.
The COVID injured list does not have a minimum stay, so it’s still possible Webb can make his start.
Posey, meanwhile, stays off the injured list for now at least. X-rays were negative on his left elbow after getting drilled by Sandy Alcantara on Saturday, using that elbow as a shield as a 90-mph changeup headed toward his head. He exited the game soon after.
“There’s enough swelling in there where we’re just kind of thinking through everything,” Kapler said Sunday, asked if it could lead to an IL placement.
Without McGee, the Giants could use Tyler Rogers as their closer, although he pitched 1 2/3 innings Saturday. Kapler mentioned Camilo Doval, the fireballing call-up, as a possibility for Sunday’s game.
